About this position
Engine Cadets at Offshore Aviation Group (OAG) are expected to demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and a strong commitment to learning while serving aboard OAG vessels. Cadets are encouraged to proactively seek opportunities for growth and development within the engine department.
The Engine Cadet will train to perform the duties and responsibilities of an Engine Officer in a safe, efficient, and professional manner, in full compliance with all applicable maritime laws, regulations, and company policies.
Under the supervision of a licensed Engineering Officer, the Engine Cadet will:
Develop fundamental awareness of shipboard safety practices and safe work procedures
Learn engineering watchkeeping duties, routines, and responsibilities
Gain practical experience in the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of propulsion and auxiliary machinery
Build foundational knowledge in automation systems and marine electrical engineering
Participate in equipment testing and operational readiness procedures
Perform maintenance tasks as directed by the Chief Engineer or designated department head
Become familiar with engine department administration, documentation, and vessel organizational structure
The Engine Cadet will stand supervised engineering watches to gain hands-on experience with watch requirements and operational procedures. This structured onboard training program is designed to prepare the cadet to meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements and become eligible for licensure and advancement to the Third Assistant Engineer position.
