POSITION SUMMARY:

In accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, the Radiation Therapist delivers radiation therapy treatments to patients referred for treatment. The radiation therapist renders patient treatments using information from simulation, dosimetry, and the physician’s treatment orders. Keeps treatment records and prepares operational reports as required. Other areas of involvement include, but are not limited to, simulations, calculations, machine operations with efficient use of treatment units and radiation safety, preparing the treatment room, positioning patients and monitoring patients during the procedure. Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of CCSF.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers prescribed radiation therapy treatments safely and accurately in accordance with physician treatment orders, dosimetry calculations, and established treatment protocols, including programming and operating linear accelerators with prescribed parameters such as dose, field size, gantry angle, and collimator settings while adhering to applicable regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.
  • Reviews all treatment-related documentation prior to each treatment session, including radiation prescriptions, physician orders, dosimetry calculations, simulation instructions, and patient consents, identifying discrepancies and escalating concerns to the radiation oncologist or appropriate team member before treatment proceeds.
  • Positions and immobilizes patients on the treatment couch according to written technical setup instructions using immobilization devices, shields, and positioning equipment to ensure accurate, safe, and reproducible treatment delivery.
  • Operates radiation therapy equipment including linear accelerators, simulation equipment, and related technology while performing required daily machine quality assurance checks to verify proper function prior to delivering patient treatments.
  • Monitors patients’ physiological and psychological responses during treatment sessions and throughout the course of therapy, recognizing adverse reactions or changes in condition and promptly communicating concerns to the radiation oncologist, nursing staff, or other appropriate team members.
  • Performs CT simulation and tumor localization procedures to support treatment planning and assist the radiation oncology team in defining target volumes for individualized treatment plans.
  • Accurately enters and maintains patient treatment parameters, daily treatment records, and operational documentation in the electronic medical record system in a timely and compliant manner consistent with HIPAA requirements, billing accuracy standards, and applicable federal and state healthcare regulations.
  • Communicates simulation and treatment procedures to patients and families in a clear, compassionate, and understandable manner, addressing questions and providing consistent support throughout the treatment process.
  • Collaborates with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated and comprehensive patient care, including participation in chart rounds and team huddles.
  • Supports advanced treatment procedures such as SBRT, SRS, and respiratory gating, troubleshoots equipment or treatment issues, and serves as a clinical resource for complex patient setups or emerging treatment techniques.
  • Assists with scheduling patient treatment appointments and coordinating daily treatment schedules to support efficient patient flow and timely delivery of care.
  • Assists with orientation and training of new therapists and clinical staff to ensure competency in simulation procedures, treatment delivery, and operation of radiation therapy equipment.
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement initiatives and adheres to organizational policies, safety regulations, accreditation standards, and ethical guidelines governing radiation therapy practice.
Requirements:

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or completion of an accredited Radiation Therapy Technology program with active RTT certification
  • Preferred minimum of five (5) years of experience within a Radiation Oncology setting.
  • Preferred Experience working with the following systems and technology: Aria, GE Simulator, Varian TrueBeam, VisionRT, and Epic. 


REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:

  • Active, unrestricted Radiation Therapist license issued by the State of Florida 
  • Current certification and registration as a Radiation Therapist (RT(T)) through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) 
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, maintained without lapse


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge in radiation therapy techniques and modalities, SBRT, SRS, IMRT, IGRT, and SGRT.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety practices, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards at the state and federal levels.
  • Proficient in radiation oncology EMRs and linear accelerator technology.
  • Demonstrated clinical efficiency and patient throughput.
  • Expertise in treatment setups, including documentation, immobilization device construction, IV contrast, and CT Simulation utilizing 4D respiration gating. 
  • Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills.
