About this position

<div style="text-align: justify;">Performs difficult technical and responsible administrative work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of heavy equipment, does related work as required. &nbsp;Work is performed under general supervision.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Maintaining and repairing heavy equipment; ensuring proper equipment operation; maintaining records; coordinating repairs.</strong></div><div style="text-align: justify;">(<em>The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. &nbsp;The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)</em></div><ul style="margin-bottom: 3pt;"><li style="text-align: justify;">Maintains and repairs heavy equipment including dozers, electric line trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, street sweepers and other heavy equipment.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Repairs, inspects, and adjusts hydraulic pumps and motors, electrical systems, diesel motors, steering systems, drive motors, boom and bucket mechanisms and other parts essential to the proper operation of equipment.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Fabricates and welds replacement parts, tools, etc.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Obtains price quotes for and orders parts and supplies.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Maintains service records; coordinates repair service performed under contract; monitors work performed by outside contractor.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Assists with snow removal and ice control.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status.</li><li style="text-align: justify;">Performs related tasks as required.</li></ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines; thorough knowledge of the safe operation and repair of heavy equipment and the principles of operation and repair of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems for heavy equipment; ability to recognize unsafe and/or improper equipment operation; ability to be firm yet tactful when directing operators to cease unsafe and/or improper equipment operation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.</div>
<strong>Education and Experience</strong><div style="text-align: justify;">Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized courses and/or certifications in hydraulics, gasoline and diesel engine repair and related mechanical and electrical systems and extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.</div><br><strong>Special Requirements&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong><br>Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.<br><br><div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>The City of New Bern is a Equal Opportunity Employer.</strong></em></div><br>
