Job Description:
Processes surgical pathology specimens including dissection, description and appropriate tissue sampling based on departmental standards for pathologist’s diagnosis. Performs and uploads gross specimen photographs on selected resection specimens. Performs other related duties as required such as specimen processor operation.
Responsibilities:
- Performs gross description, complete dissection of all surgical pathology specimens and dictation of data including large cancer cases using voice recognition, PowerPath, EPIC and Sectra software systems.
- Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic analysis based on departmental standards.
- Prepares frozen sections for pathologist’s interpretation and assists in processing samples for ancillary studies, e.g. culture and flow cytometry.
- Photographs surgical specimens as assigned and maintains the photography equipment in good working order.
- Checks and resolves inappropriate specimen submissions.
- Operates automated block printer.
- Ensures that the surgical cutting area is clean and in good working order.
- Maintains a sufficient inventory of all necessary supplies via coordination with section supervisor.
- Follows all established organizational policies and procedures.
- Job duties include the handling of hazardous material.
- Accepts direction and changes in assignments from section supervisor and Medical Director.
- Completes tasks within appropriate time frame and in order of priority.
- Performs other PA related duties as assigned or requested.
- Works collaboratively with laboratory administration, pathology department colleagues, and staff.
Qualifications:
- An associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical technology, obtained from an accredited institution.
- Basic knowledge of human anatomy, microsurgical techniques and general laboratory skills.
- Understanding of safety and infection control requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation.
- Ability to process assigned duties in an efficient and organized manner and meet the expectations of the practice.
- Close attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to identify, research and resolve problems and discrepancies.
