Purpose & Description

The Weld Helper/Cutter is a member of the Welding Production team.  The purpose is to assist in welding, fabricating, and assembling metal and/or aluminum structures using cutters, shapers and measuring tools. Set up, operate, and maintain welding and/or cutting equipment.  Understand and implement personal and company safety measures by wearing specialized protective equipment. The Weld Helper/Cutter is a moderately-skilled position with knowledge of cutting metal, aluminum, composite, and wood either by education and/or experience.

Skills & knowledge

  • Knowledge and hands-on use of specialized equipment, systems, hand tools, including power tools and techniques that is appropriate for the area(s) of specialization.
  • Ability to read and use tape measure and perform basic math functions using a calculator.
  • Knowledge of and hands on experience with raw materials.
  • Knowledge and hands on experience in guiding a portable or fixed saw.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas through spoken and written words or sentences.
  • Ability to manage own time and workload.
  • Must be able to speak, write and understand English language.

Tasks & Activities

  • Follow and obey all instructions given to you.
  • Set up cutting equipment and maintain.
  • Safely move raw materials from one place to another.
  • Determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do the job.
  • Cut raw materials and/or weld raw materials according to drawings or instructions given you.
  • Know and follow all safety policies and wear and utilize proper safety and protective equipment.
  • Notify your direct lead or supervisor is equipment is malfunctioning or needs maintenance.
  • Completion of Safety and First Aid Training and on-going safety training as provided by MDI.
  • Report any unsafe acts or unsafe conditions as necessary.
  • Required to substitute for a welder when needed.
  • Participate in departmental or company meetings.

  • Resolve simple problems without the assistance of direct supervisor or leader.
  • Resolve complex problems with the assistance of the direct supervisor or leader.
  • Seeks answers from supervisor when a task and direction is not clear.
  • Must maintain a calm, respectful manner, and attitude always.
  • Must never use disrespectful, foul, profane language, but use decent language and gestures.

Physical Requirements/Environment & work setting

  • Requires standing, sitting, bending, and repetitive motion.
  • Requires hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Requires lifting and moving a minimum of 35 pounds.
  • Requires contact and/or face-to-face discussions.
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Exposure to chemicals, hazardous equipment, minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
  • Requires working indoors and outdoors in an uncontrolled environment.
  • Protective Equipment is required to be worn when in the Welding Shop area or Finishing area.

Education & Experience

  • Requires at least 1 (one) year of on-the-job training or any combination of education and/or experience.
  • First Aid Training and Safety desired.
