Overview
The Seasonal Warehouse / Cold Storage Manager role at Circle Seafoods involves overseeing all primary operations related to the company's on-site Alaska facility, where fresh-caught salmon is purchased and then frozen directly from the fishing fleet.
Essential Functions
To perform the role of Seasonal Warehouse / Cold Storage Manager successfully, an individual must consistently demonstrate the ability to execute each essential function with the highest level of efficiency, accuracy, and compliance. This position requires a proactive, hands-on manager capable of overseeing all facets of our seasonal storage and distribution operations.
The core responsibilities of the Seasonal Warehouse / Cold Storage Manager include, but are not limited to, the following critical areas:
Warehouse and Inventory Management: Directly supervising all inbound and outbound logistics for seafood products. This includes meticulous inventory tracking, cycle counting, and reconciliation to ensure 100% accuracy of stock levels. The manager is responsible for optimizing the physical layout of the cold storage facility to maximize capacity and accessibility while ensuring product integrity.
Cold Chain Integrity and Quality Control: Maintaining strict adherence to all cold storage standards and food safety regulations (e.g., HACCP, FDA). This involves continuous monitoring of refrigeration equipment, temperature logs, and rapid response to any deviations to safeguard product quality and minimize spoilage or loss.
Team Leadership and Supervision: Recruiting, training, scheduling, and managing a seasonal team of warehouse staff. This includes setting clear performance expectations, conducting daily briefings, fostering a culture of safety and productivity, and managing disciplinary actions or conflict resolution as needed.
Safety and Compliance: Implementing and enforcing all company and regulatory safety protocols within the warehouse environment. This includes managing forklift operations, ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), conducting regular safety audits, and investigating all incidents and accidents to prevent recurrence.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance: Coordinating preventative maintenance and necessary repairs for all warehouse equipment, including forklifts, pallet jacks, racking systems, and refrigeration units. Ensuring the facility remains clean, secure, and fully operational throughout the season.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining comprehensive records of inventory, shipments, labor hours, and safety logs. Generating accurate and timely reports for senior management on operational performance, costs, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Cross-Functional Communication: Serving as the primary point of contact between the warehouse operations and other departments, including Production, Sales, and Transportation/Logistics, to ensure smooth coordination of product movement and fulfillment of customer orders.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- This position requires working long, demanding hours in a cold, wet processing environment.
- This role involves working on your feet for long hours, both indoors and outdoors. Physical activities include lifting ~ 50 lbs, bending, standing, and moving throughout the day.
- Must be capable of performing repetitive work, standing, bending, twisting, and utilizing your hands with precision.
- At times throughout the season we will be operating and working 7 days a week, workdays vary Sunday through Saturday. Workdays and shift times will vary with seafood deliveries and other factors.
- Regular exposure to weather and a plant environment.
- Regular exposure to freezer temperatures.
- Occasional lifting of 50-100 lb. boxes.
- Able to walk stairs.
Schedule: Expect shifts up to 16 hours per day, 7 days a week, with breaks occurring approximately every 4 hours.
Required Education & Experience for Seasonal Warehouse / Cold Storage Manager:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Industry Experience & Mindset:
Ambitious and Seafood-Focused: Candidates must demonstrate genuine ambition, a strong work ethic, and a proactive, keen interest in the dynamic and challenging environment of the seafood processing and distribution industry.
Experience in High-Volume, 24/7 Operations is Crucial: Prior, verifiable experience working within a large-scale, 24-hour, multi-shift, and fast-paced industrial production or warehouse operation is preferred.
Alaska Seafood Industry Tenure (Minimum 2-4 Years): A minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of direct, hands-on experience within the Alaska seafood industry is highly preferred.
Technical Skills:
Online Inventory System Proficiency is Highly Desired: Experience utilizing modern, online (cloud-based or networked) inventory management systems (IMS) or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is strongly preferred. Proficiency in accurate data entry, tracking product location, managing rotation (FIFO/LIFO), and generating detailed reports is necessary for maintaining efficient cold storage operations.
Excellent Decision-Making Ability: The role requires consistent, sound, and swift decision-making under pressure, often with limited information. This includes problem-solving related to logistics, equipment failures, safety compliance, personnel issues, and inventory discrepancies to minimize downtime and prevent financial loss.
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
- Ability to prioritize and organize tasks.
- Thorough knowledge of the seafood industry, processing rules and regulations.
- Valid Drivers license
- Ability to travel to Alaska and other work locations
