Job Overview:

The Project Engineer is a hands on technical role responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of SmartChoice Communications solutions. This position is accountable for staging, testing, configuring, and preparing all voice, data, security, AV, and managed service equipment for deployment.

 

The ideal candidate brings strong technical proficiency, excellent problem solving skills, and the ability to support implementations both remotely and on site. The role includes work on UCaaS, VoIP, hosted call center technologies, video collaboration systems, security applications, and their related integrations. This individual partners closely with customers, internal teams, and third-party vendors to ensure seamless delivery and onboarding experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Implementation & Support

Coordinate with customers to schedule delivery, installation, and activation of SmartChoice products and services.Configure, validate, and test SmartChoice cloud‑based telephony solutions, including integrations with back‑end systems and external service providers.Provide remote and on‑site support for deployment, troubleshooting, and Go‑Live activities in partnership with field engineers and third parties.Support SmartChoice’s UCaaS platform, including call flow configuration, SIP endpoints, device provisioning, and system diagnostics.Perform SIP trunk setup, configuration, and end‑to‑end testing.Review technical specifications, site surveys, customer orders, and installation templates to ensure accurate equipment staging.Deliver thorough customer onboarding and product training, including follow‑up support to ensure successful adoption.

Documentation & Quality Assurance

Maintain and update project installation plans and technical documentation.Create and manage configuration standards, procedures, and ongoing maintenance guidelines.Verify the completion of scheduled jobs and validate staging accuracy prior to deployment.Prepare detailed as‑built documentation and contribute to process improvements focused on quality and operational efficiency.Assist with hardware inventory management, including testing and documenting customer‑returned devices.

 

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Work collaboratively with Sales, Client Success, Engineering, Project Management, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure project success.Identify opportunities for service enhancement and recommend improvements to existing products and processes.Assist field engineers with installation support, technical guidance, and escalations.Install and train customers on SmartChoice products and solutions both remotely and on‑site.

Business Continuity & Compliance

Participate in the development, testing, and execution of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) initiatives.Follow established security, incident management, and change‑management procedures.Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of VoIP phones, firewalls, switches, routers, cloud platforms, and related technologies.

 

Additional Duties

Participate in support for after-hour installations and system cutovers as needed.Travel locally or overnight for training, installations, and customer support.Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.5+ years of technical field service, electronics, or network implementation experience.2+ years supporting telephony site surveys, VoIP system installations, wired/wireless handset deployments, and verification of cabling infrastructure.Experience staging, configuring, and testing IP telephony and network equipment.Hands‑on experience implementing VoIP and related telecommunications solutions.Understanding of telecommunication infrastructure and user-facing applications.Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required.

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Strong customer service orientation and ability to deliver training effectively.Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, cable testing devices, and network diagnostic tools.Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related applications.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
