About this position
Job Purpose: The Financial Counselor supports patients and families by providing clear, compassionate guidance on insurance benefits, financial obligations, payment options, and available assistance programs. This role ensures patients understand their financial responsibilities while helping the organization maintain strong revenue cycle performance through accurate benefit verification, timely collections, and proactive communication.
Primary Responsibilities:
Patient Financial Support
Meet with patients to explain insurance coverage, deductibles, co‑pays, co‑insurance, and out‑of‑pocket estimates.
Provide clear, empathetic counseling on financial responsibilities and available payment options.
Assist patients in completing financial assistance, charity care, or payment plan applications.
Serve as a primary point of contact for patient billing questions and concerns.
Insurance Verification & Authorization
Verify insurance eligibility and benefits prior to admission or service.
Identify coverage limitations, prior authorization requirements, and potential financial risks.
Communicate benefit details to clinical, admissions, and billing teams to ensure accurate workflows.
Revenue Cycle Coordination
Document all financial counseling interactions in the EHR or billing system.
Collaborate with billing, admissions, and utilization review teams to ensure accurate charge capture and claim submission.
Monitor patient balances and follow up on outstanding payments or missing documentation.
Support upfront collections and maintain compliance with organizational financial policies.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and organizational privacy standards.
Ensure all financial counseling activities comply with federal, state, and payer regulations.
Keep current with insurance changes, payer policies, and financial assistance programs.
Customer Service & Communication
Provide exceptional service to patients, families, and internal teams.
Communicate complex financial information in a clear, respectful, and supportive manner.
Help reduce patient anxiety by offering transparent solutions‑focused guidance.
Education and experience, degree and/or certification required (if applicable):
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, financial counseling, or related field
Strong understanding of medical terminology, insurance plans, and revenue cycle processes
Excellent communication, customer service, and problem‑solving skills
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
Preferred
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related field
Experience in behavioral health, hospital, or outpatient medical settings
Familiarity with EHR and billing systems (e.g., Sunwave, CollaborateMD, Athena, etc.)
Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial payer requirements
