About this position

St. Mary's Catholic School is a joyful PK3-12th Catholic Classical school located in Taylor, just 30 miles outside the Austin metroplex. We are seeking a passionate, faith-filled music teacher who is responsible for teaching music education to students in grades PK3-8th Grade, in coordination with our high school music teacher. An integral part of our Catholic Classical PK3-12th grade program, the Music Director/Teacher helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include liturgical planning and performance, singing, moving to music, playing of instruments and listening.


The Music Teacher/Director fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by planning, teaching, inspiring, and evaluating students as they encounter the beauty of our first language - music.


This position reports to the Head of School and has decision-making responsibilities within the framework of school policies, philosophy, organization, and curriculum.


Essential Duties –

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Diocese.
  • Plans for instruction with logically sequenced objectives based on adopted curriculum and submits plans according to school policies.
  • Provides appropriate materials and resources for students to engage in learning.
  • Uses effective instructional methods and models according to professional standard practice.
  • Uses varied assessment tools to perform both formative and summative assessments.
  • Provides instruction and assessment for understanding.
  • Teaches general music classes including harmony, appreciation, history, and ensemble.
  • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including classical, liturgical,traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
  • Provides opportunities for music ensembles including band, choir & musicals.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for school and community (Christmas, and Spring).
  • Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.
  • Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Develops and refines music curriculum based on Diocesan, state and national standards of music theory, history, creating, performing, and responding.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
  • Evaluates each student's musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute.
  • Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Cooperation with Head of School and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.Serves as director for the school's musical productions.
  • Accompanies weekly school Masses.
  • Maintains current and accurate records according to school policies.
  • Practices positive, consistent discipline in the management of the classroom.
  • Communicates clearly with faculty and parents regarding academic, behavioral, and safety concerns and student progress.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits.
  • Maintains a work schedule that maximizes availability to the school, students and staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church.

  • Knowledge of vocal music and instrumentation, instructional methods and strategies, and curriculum differentiation.
  • Knowledge of instruction in instruments, to lead band and/or orchestra program
  • Knowledge of the Catholic liturgy in order to accompany at weekly school Masses.
  • Possesses excellent piano/accompanist skills.
  • Able to work closely with Liturgical Music Director of the parish.
  • Knowledge of child development, learning, and behavior.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or Music from an accredited American university or the equivalent in a foreign country

Experience:

Successful teaching experience preferred

Certifications and Training:

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for teaching field as set forth by the Diocese and TCCB ED.
  • Must meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the Diocese and school administration.
  • Must complete Religion Certification Part 1 within two years of the date of hire, completing a minimum of 25 hours each year.
