About this position
PEC's Commercial Carpenter will build, erect, install, and repair forms, structures, and other fixtures made from wood and other materials as needed to assist with several types of commercial construction projects. This role requires solid commercial carpentry skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and motivation to grow within a dynamic team environment.

- Plan Reading
- Measure, mark, and arrange materials to establish layout based on blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
- Cut and shape structures, forms, or other fixtures from wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall.

- Wall Board
- Wall Layout
- Light finish carpentry
- Install Commercial windows and doors, frames, and hardware
- Toilet and bath accessories
- Join materials with the most appropriate nail, screw, staple, or adhesive.
- Ensure the accuracy of work by checking completed projects with tools such as levels, surveying equipment, or framing squares; corrects problems as needed.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding.
- Adhere to local building and safety codes and guidelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Hand Tools
- Tape Measure – Accurate measuring is critical.
- Framing Square & Speed Square – For layout and checking angles.
- Chalk Line – Marking straight lines over long distances.
- Levels (Spirit Level, Laser Level) – Ensuring surfaces are plumb and level.
- Hammer – Typically a framing hammer for nails.
- Utility Knife – Cutting materials like drywall or insulation.
- Chisels – For fine wood shaping and adjustments.
- Hand Saw – For quick cuts without power tools.
- Clamps – Holding materials securely during assembly.
- Marking Tools – Pencils, scribes for layout.
Power Tools
- Circular Saw – For cutting lumber and sheet goods.
- Miter Saw – For precise angle cuts.
- Table Saw – For ripping boards and sheet materials.
- Jigsaw – For curved or intricate cuts.
- Reciprocating Saw (Sawzall) – For demolition or cutting through tough materials.
- Drill/Driver – For drilling holes and driving screws.
- Impact Driver – For heavy-duty fastening.
- Router – For shaping edges and cutting grooves.
- Planer – For smoothing and leveling boards.
- Power Sanders – For finishing surfaces
Specialty Tools
- Nail Gun (Framing & Finish) – Speeds up assembly.
- Rotary Laser Level – For large-scale layout and leveling.
- Moisture Meter – Checking wood moisture content.
- Stud Finder – Locating framing behind walls.
- Concrete Tools – If working on commercial slabs (e.g., hammer drill).
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of vocational school or technical college or apprenticeship program; OR at least three years of experience via on-the-job training required.
- Experience equipment use is a plus, including scaffold, scissor life, boom lift, fork lift, telehandler, etc.
- Safety: Use of Hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
- OSHA 10 or 30 is a plus
- Ability to understand directions and read blueprints.
- Ability to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately.
- Ability to properly care for and use tools of the trade.
- Thorough understanding of carpentry principles and methods.
- Works well as part of a team.
- Flexible, with proven ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Self-starter who can take initiative and drive results.
- While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to lift and/or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally lifting to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls.
- Must be able to traverse worksite in several types of weather and bend, climb, stretch, reach, and lean to make inspections.
- Must be able to safely work with sharp tools or power equipment.
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and terrains.
- Must have manual dexterity, a good sense of balance, and excellent hand-eye coordination.
- May require prolonged periods of standing, climbing, bending, stooping squatting, and kneeling.
- Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus.
- Work Environment: this position works primarily outdoors.
