Directional Boring Operator

Location: Midwest Travel Required (IL & WI)

SRU Electric LLC is seeking an experienced Directional Boring Operator to support our growing telecom construction operations. This position is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure safely and efficiently.

The ideal candidate has experience in telecom underground construction, understands utility locates and bore path planning, and can lead a small crew in a production-driven environment.

• Operate directional drilling equipment (Vermeer, etc.) for fiber and conduit installation
• Read and interpret utility locates, bore plans, and construction prints
• Track drill head and maintain proper bore depth and alignment
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance
• Coordinate with locator and ground crew to ensure safe operations
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies
• Maintain production goals while prioritizing safety and quality
• Travel to various job sites throughout the Midwest

Qualifications

• 3+ years of directional drilling experience (telecom preferred)
• Experience installing fiber optic conduit and related underground utilities
• Knowledge of HDD tracking systems
• Ability to read prints and utility locate markings
• Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required)
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
• Willingness to travel and work extended rotations
