Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction and industrial equipment. This includes machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, cranes, and other diesel-powered equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on heavy equipment

  • Repair or replace defective parts including: engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulic components

  • Use diagnostic tools and technical manuals to troubleshoot problems

  • Test equipment after repairs to ensure proper performance

  • Maintain service records and maintenance logs

  • Follow safety standards and company policies

  • Respond to emergency repair calls when required

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (technical certification preferred)

  • Proven experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems

  • Ability to read schematics and repair manuals

  • Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Ability to lift heavy parts and work in physically demanding conditions

  • Valid driver’s license (CDL may be preferred)

Work Environment

  • Construction sites, repair shops, mining operations, or industrial facilities

  • Exposure to grease, noise, dust, and outdoor weather conditions

  • May require overtime, weekend, or on-call work
