Department: Police, Traffic BureauFT / PT: Part-Time Salary: $18 per hour
Job Summary:
The School Crossing Guard works independently, in the absence of direct supervision, to safely cross school-aged youth at assigned intersections.This is a part time, as-needed, position with Hillsborough Township, up to a maximum of 3 hours per day during the school year. The position requires standing for an extended period of time while holding a stop sign in the air in a position visible to drivers.
Job Responsibilities:
● Safely crossing elementary school students in crosswalks
● Using non-verbal signals to get and keep the attention of drivers and pedestrians
● Maintains control of pedestrians in crosswalks
● Develops and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work
● Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Stopping and starting traffic as needed
- Direct students safely across streets
- Report incidents or dangerous situations to the police department
- Give directions and aid citizens as needed
- Report any chronically bad driver or vehicular violation to the police department
- Perform related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● Knowledge of traffic regulations
● Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather
● Ability to work with children
● Ability to follow written and oral instructions
● Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
● Maintain a professional attitude at all times
● Have daily access to a car/vehicle
● Have a telephone at place of residence
● Be available to work various times between 7 am and 5 pm on school days
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
● Previous experience as a Crossing Guard helpful
Education, Certifications and Licenses:
● High school graduation or G.E.D. issued by a state Department of Education
● Possess a valid New Jersey Driver's License
Physical Requirements:
● The position requires standing for an extended period of time, up to a maximum of 3 hours per day, while holding a stop sign in the air in a position visible to drivers
● Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather Additional Information:
● Equipment and training is provided

● Applicants must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check
