About the Program

Andover Bread Loaf (ABL) reimagines education based on a pedagogy of care that, through writing and the arts, ignites change in youth, adults, and educators by providing the space, trust, and freedom for them to develop their intellectual, leadership, and collaborative skills. Using these tools, they can transform themselves and their communities while working toward social justice.

The Adult Workshop for Educators is an intensive summer two-week graduate professional development program focusing on critical literacy for social justice, hosted by Andover Bread Loaf at Phillips Academy. In partnership with Middlebury College, participants receive graduate credit for completing this course and become connected with the International Bread Loaf Teacher Network.

 

About the Role

AWE Directors are expected to lead the overall planning and creation of curriculum aligned in ABL pedagogical values for the Adult Workshop for Educators. Core responsibilities include developing the day-to-day program schedule, facilitating daily team meetings and reflection sessions, and instructing participants to implement and design curricula based in liberatory practices in their communities. Directors must arrive on time, prepared, and present for the entirety of the day, every day, for the duration of the graduate course. The boarding nature of this program requires directors to be a point of contact for participants, including some evening and weekend activities.

 

Minimum Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience with programming that supports professional development and learning opportunities for adults in the areas of critical literacy for social justice and is strongly preferred.A commitment to culturally responsive practices and a demonstrated ability to incorporate and engage diverse perspectives across all aspects of the work.Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong attention to detail and lead independent projects.Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including youth, board members, and community partners.Self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively and brings forth an asset-based approach to programming.Ability to mentor adult participants in their writing journey using a strength-based approach to provide feedback. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Passionate about working with educators and developing their pedagogical and theoretical frameworks of education grounded in liberatory and culturally sustaining practices.Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Workspace apps, as well as basic computer and AV (Audio Visual) skills.Ability to physically set up and break down all learning and program spaces that align with pedagogical practices in collaboration with directors.Proven ability to plan and execute programs and events and manage communication and coordination between multiple community partners and other educational spaces.Valid driver’s license preferred. 

Responsibilities and Duties

Attend pre-program meetings, orientations, to build out a clear agenda and delegate roles.Directors will collaboratively build and prepare residential logistics, program scheduling, and planning commencement and final evaluations.Maintain clear communication with campus offices, staff, participants, regarding the program, activities, and any pertinent issues.Cultivate a nurturing and positive environment that emphasizes collaboration and upholds ABL values while building community amongst staff and participants.Gather, reflect, and evaluate participant surveys and coursework.
