About this position
The crane operator shall safely and efficiently operate a crane to lift, move, and position heavy loads in various construction, manufacturing, or industrial settings. The Crane Operators’ job is crucial to the success and safety of construction projects, as they are responsible for moving materials and equipment to the required locations.
The duties and responsibilities of the Crane Operator are, but not limited to:
- Operate the crane; this involves using controls and equipment to lift, lower, and move heavy objects with precision and accuracy.
- Ensuring safety is a top priority. All safety protocols and procedures must be followed, including conducting pre-operational inspections to check the crane's condition, inspecting the load, and confirming the stability of the lifting area.
- Load Management: Determining load capacities and ensuring that loads are properly balanced and secured before lifting is essential. A crane operator will need to interpret load charts and calculate load weights to determine the crane's safe lifting capacity.
- Communication: Clear communication with team members is crucial. The crane operator will work closely with supervisors, signalers, and other construction professionals to receive instructions, provide updates on work progress, and coordinate crane movements to ensure the safety of everyone on-site.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conducting routine maintenance and inspections of the crane and its components to identify and address any mechanical issues is necessary. This includes lubricating moving parts, checking hydraulic and electrical systems, and reporting any malfunctions or defects to the appropriate personnel.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records and documentation related to crane operations, such as daily activity logs, maintenance reports, and incident reports, is essential for compliance and accountability purposes.
- Problem-solving: Identifying and resolving issues that may arise during crane operations is critical. This may involve troubleshooting mechanical problems, adjusting crane settings, or adapting to changing conditions on the job site.
Requirements
The Crane Operator will require the correct mandatory qualifications and certifications as per the Delmar Training program. The position will have the following (as a minimum):
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years working as a crane operator..
- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards.
- Must be able to assess potential risks and hazards associated with forklift operations and take appropriate steps to mitigate these risks.
- In-depth knowledge of rigging equipment and heavy machinery.
- Excellent hearing and vision.
- Ability to work at heights and in noisy environments.
- Physical fitness and ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
- Knowledgeable and competent in rigging techniques and safety practices.
