About this position

Mission: Transform the manual and unacceptably slow Excel-based estimating process at ATACO Steel Products Corp into a streamlined and efficient system, reducing the time to quote most jobs to under 24 hours.

Outcomes:

  1. Streamline Quoting Process: Develop and implement a more efficient quoting system using Excel and other tools to reduce quote turnaround time to under 24 hours.
  2. Enhance Collaboration: Coordinate with internal and external resources to improve overall efficiency.
  3. Plant Engagement: Spend significant time in the plant to understand production processes, ensuring accurate and feasible quotes.
  4. Drive Change: Lead initiatives for continuous improvement in the estimating process, introducing innovative solutions to enhance productivity.
  5. Cross-functional Involvement: Participate in other engineering activities during slower periods to broaden skill set and support the engineering team.
  6. Program Launch: Launch a program to outsource part of the quoting process, ensuring seamless integration and collaboration.
  7. Software Recommendation: Recommend and implement software solutions to streamline and automate the quoting process. The investigation of AI tools is absolutely encouraged.

Competencies:

  1. SolidWorks Proficiency: Strong experience in using SolidWorks software.
  2. Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze historical data and prepare detailed cost estimates.
  3. Office 365 Proficiency: Advanced skills in Excel for manual quoting processes, with a vision to automate and streamline. Working knowledge of Word, Access, Powerpoint is expected. Knowledge and skills in newer tools such as Power Automate a plus!
  4. Initiative and Drive: Demonstrated enthusiasm for taking responsibility, driving change, and achieving continuous improvement.
  5. Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and external partners.
  6. Flexibility: Willingness to spend time in the plant and adapt to varying work demands.
  7. Collaboration: Ability to work well with international teams and coordinate effectively to meet objectives.

Join our dynamic team at ATACO Steel Products Corp, a leader in metal stamping and fabrication. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimating Engineer to support our growth and drive improvements in our quoting process.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze historical company data related to work-center capabilities and capacity
  • Collect quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates utilizing Excel and other software templates
  • Develop and implement a more efficient quoting system to reduce quote turnaround time to under 24 hours
  • Plan, hand-off, and delegate awarded new programs as necessary
  • Communicate project status to customers effectively
  • Develop and maintain accurate procedural documents
  • Spend significant time in the plant to understand production processes and ensure accurate quotes
  • Participate in other engineering activities during slower periods
  • Launch a program to outsource part of the quoting process
  • Recommend and implement software solutions to streamline and automate the quoting process

Requirements:

Essential Requirements:

  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent manufacturing experience
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and Microsoft Office suite, including Excel
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated initiative and excitement to drive change and continuous improvement
  • Comfortable spending time in a manufacturing plant.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with cost estimating and using cost estimating software
  • Experience in a metal stamping or fabrication facility (preferred but not required)
