Scope/Purpose of the Position
As part of the Research and Development team, the Packaging Engineer is responsible for the execution of packaging activities for current and future Bakerly products and NORAC initiatives. Significant collaboration is required between Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain and Logistics, and Sales and Marketing. The Packaging Engineer will be expected to follow our GMPs. The Packaging Engineer will report to the R&D QA Manager. Additional duties are as assigned.
Major Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Packaging Supplier Management
- Communicate and collaborate with suppliers for new and existing packaging systems.
- Qualify and recommend new suppliers based on:
- Material compliance
- Production approvals
- Relationship
- Quality scoring
Project Leadership
- Lead packaging improvement and innovation projects effectively.
- Communicate project status to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Develop, plan, and execute plant trials.
- Perform commercialization activities at appropriate manufacturing facilities to ensure machine validation, packaging structure, and/or packaging design.
- Actively participate on launch teams.
- Utilize strong communication skills to influence the direction of a project.
Packaging Determination and Analysis
- Identify cost-savings initiatives and generate quotations on new and existing items.
- Administer packaging data in Bakerly's ERP.
- Prepare and issue test reports, material specifications, finished packaging specifications, and pallet patterns; provide recommendations based on these findings.
- Conduct and manage tests of packaging materials, structures, and unit loads; provide recommendations based on these findings.
- Conduct root cause analysis and suggest action plans on failed packaging systems.
Company and Department Improvement
- Propose, design, and manage various packaging CAPEX projects.
- Partner with Marketing and Sales teams to develop, evaluate, and deliver new packages to support Bakerly's strategic objectives.
- Collaborate with manufacturing to develop packaging/process qualification criteria.
- Transfer key technical information effectively to technical and nontechnical coworkers.
- Prepare Standard Operating Procedures as needed for existing and new processes.
- Solve problems creatively and be flexible in approach.
· Bachelor's Degree required in Packaging or highly related field.
· A minimum of 2 year of experience with a consumer-packaged goods company in a packaging development role preferred
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
· Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage workflows
· Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
· Understanding of safe work practices, safety & environmental regulations
· Comply with hygiene and food safety rules defined in the company policies
· Ability to travel up to 10-20% of time. Must be able to travel independently and as a responsible Bakerly representative.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb (including stairs/ladders).
· Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
· Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
· Physical dexterity necessary to handle supplies, machine parts and tools.
· Vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
